Digital imaging is a type of X-ray that uses sensors to replace traditional radiology film, allowing for a more complete and clear picture of a patient’s oral cavity. There are three imaging methods that can be used: direct, indirect, and the semi-direct method. The direct method utilizes an electronic censor that is placed in the mouth to record images. The indirect method uses an X-ray film scanner to view traditional dental X-rays as digital images. The semi-direct technique combines the direct and indirect methods to convert X-rays into digital images.
Digital dental radiographs are taken inside (intraoral) and outside (extraoral) the mouth. Intraoral is the most commonly used dental X-ray, providing great detail, detecting cavities, checking the status of developing teeth, and monitoring teeth and bone health. The extraoral imaging does not identify individual tooth problems, but is used to detect impacted teeth; monitor jaw growth and development; and identify potential issues between teeth, jaws, and TMJ, or other facial bones.
