There are several causes of dental implant infection, including:
- One-size-fits-all abutments: if a crown or implant is ill-fitted, patients can experience inflammation and infection from an improperly-fitted crown that presses on the tissue.
- Oral bacteria: if bacteria enters the surgical site, it can cause a post-operational infection. These infections can usually be prevented by taking antibiotics before and after surgery.
- Cheaply made fixtures: While these may make for a cheaper treatment, there is greater risk for developing gaps or loose screws.
- Loose dental implants: infection that begins around the implant site can enter the implant and cause bacteria to build up. In this case, the implant must be removed and replaced to prevent further complications.
The easiest and best way to treat an infection in dental implants is to remove the implants and accompanying cement, remove all devitalized tissue, and use long-term antimicrobial treatment. It’s important to locate the cause of why the implant became infected in the first place. Then, our periodontist can replace the dental implant and treat the cause of the infection.
There may be other treatments our doctors may use to ensure the elimination of an infected implant. Contact our practice today for more information or if you think your implants could be infected.
